Market Changes

We have made a business decision to significantly shrink our farmer’s market operations and reduce from 13 weekly markets down to 3. You will find a full supply with expanded cuts on a regular weekly basis year-round at Falls Church, Arlington Courthouse and Dupont Circle markets.

The main driving force, is that we have decided to increase our cow/calf operation and decrease our stocker-to-meat operation in order to support our long range goals. This shift will reduce the quantity of meat that we produce and increase the quantity of calves. Clearly this sounds counter-intuitive, but the worldwide demand for bison meat has skyrocketed so that the demand for breeding stock has eliminated the processing of all female bison for the coming few years. This shift causes a 50% reduction in available meat in the short term as the bison industry makes adjustments.

There are a whole host of other reasons related to our reduction in farmer’s market participation, including personal, labor, and logistic factors. We selected to remain in the markets that have supported farm production and sales on a year-round basis. This decision was not made lightly. We spent many years cultivating a relationship with customers in 10 other communities. We want to thank all of those customers for their support, and we hope that they will visit us at one of the current market locations periodically to stock up on bison products, particularly as the supply of bison available in conventional locations becomes harder to find.
